Safeguarding a coastal ecosystem of significance

We attended fabulous field days in October. The work carried out by the entrants to the Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards (CMEA) is to be encouraged. That’s why we have been supportive of the CMEA since its beginnings, sponsoring the Supreme Award winner jointly with Plant & Food Research, and celebrating the work of all category winners.

The East Coast Protection Group (ECPG) is an impressive group working hard to protect an area of significance for the region. The group won the Landscape & Habitat Enhancement category, sponsored by Morgans Road Nursery.

“Their field day was very inspirational with a lot of wind thrown in”, says Susan Foster, Operations and Accounts Manager, MRC.

Collaborating with the Department of Conservation, Marlborough District Council, iwi, research agencies, schools, and enthusiasts the group champions the preservation of a 42km coastal ecosystem from Marfells Beach to the Waima River.

Cape Campbell is an important refuge for migrating birds, and ECPG members are combatting predator threats to protect birdlife. Guest speakers Shawn Gerrity (University of Canterbury) shared post-2016 earthquake recovery insights, while Mike Avis (Marlborough District Council) detailed planting progress in significant natural areas.

Follow ECPG on Facebook and visit Limestone Coast Restoration Project to support their vital work.
